Tribal Rugs
Rug weaving is one of the main occupations of the tribal people. Since the nomads move between the pastures on the mountains flat parts, they don't weave big size rugs. Rugs, are woven in very simple, attachable transportable looms, have designs which pass from generation to generation by mainly oral tradition. Designs used by the tribal people often symbolize fertility, health, and desire for having a child and symbols protecting nomadic people from the evil eye. Colors, extracted from the nature, have limited number.
Village Rugs
Village carpets are classified between tribal rugs and workshop carpets. Since the some of the tribal people preferred settled life during centuries and mixed with the village populations, village rugs today offers most amazing variations of colors, designs and symbols originating the tribal and nomadic art. These rugs primarily are with medallions, repeating geometric patterns. There is great use of tree of life and mihrap (praying niche) patters.
Workshop Rugs
From the point of their material, technique, composition workshop rugs differ from the tribal and village rugs. These rugs are woven under the supervision of a master weaver who prepares the designs on the milimetric paper. Having a great density of knots, workshop rugs, besides the geometric designs of tribal rugs, offer very elaborate and sophisticated patters. Fineness and density of knot, quality of material, symmetrical balance of the design gains importance.
Master Workshops
This term can be used only for few workshops where the most prestigious rugs are woven. Master weavers in some of these workshops break world records for highest density of knots. Rugs in the master workshops are generally in pure silk or wool and cotton combination.
